How to climb the ladder in a male dominated field!

In many fields, very often we tend to see a majority of men occupying the top positions or the entire field dominated by male employees. It starts from engineering, architecture and even technology. But just because women are outnumbered by male counterparts doesn’t mean that they cannot climb the ladder.

Nothing can stop you from being the leader you are meant to be and of course not your gender!

Here are few points that you can consider if you want to climb up your corporate ladder!

  1. Let your voice be heard.

According to studies women are less likely to speak up than men during meetings. And when they do, they allow themselves to be interrupted and they apologize repeatedly.
Recognize the value of your opinion and have the confidence to share it. If you speak up confidently and you trust your opinion, people will want to listen!

  1. Communicate clearly and directly!

Usually women tend to communicate with an apologetic tone often using phrases such as “am not sure if this suits you” etc…  This apologetic tone can often be taken as powerless  and fragile.  Just practice being assertive, it doesn’t mean that you are being rude but instead opt for an authoritative tone and speak with confidence.

  1. Become a person of value and accept credits for your work!

Recognize your own worth and don’t wait for someone to validate it. If you want to handle to new project-say, no one will appreciate your contributions if you don’t. And take credit! Its equally important to acknowledge everyone’s contribution and work but if you are the backbone and you accomplished something, don’t pass on the credit to someone else. Accept it and inspire the confidence in your abilities while praising and recognizing the efforts of your colleagues at the same time.

  1. Challenge yourself!

Don’t let your gender be your weakness. Studies have shown that women who had masculine traits were more liable to be promoted than those who did not. Challenging your gender roles, doesn’t mean to sacrifice your moral values, personality or traditions. Just try bringing small changes like asking for a raise. If you think you deserve it, don’t let your gender hold you back, go ahead and talk to the male boss confidently about it.

  1.  Look for explanations and not excuses!

Why is it that passing rates are higher in girls but when it comes to the field of work, male are dominating? Do not let you gender be used as an excuse, instead if you feel injustice is being done, ask for explanations and work on whichever reason has been provided to you so that next time, it doesn’t hold valid and cannot be used as an excuse!
