Being a Mauritian, I would not shy away from describing the island as Paradise. In fact if you engage into a conversation with anyone from the Island, at some point of time you will be hearing this from them.
Mauritius is the country that embodies any dream holiday cliché that you would mention, white sandy beaches, azure waters, lush green sugarcane fields marvelous mountain peaks. The people are very friendly and lead a rather relaxed life. Mauritius also offers the opportunity of swimming with dolphins.

Mauritius – heaven on earth, can be seen as a tiny spot on the world map and as a blot of land in the middle of the ocean from an aircraft. However this tiny island has so much to offer and the pristine atmosphere can be seen from the window of your flight while landing to the paradise island!

If we go back in history, Mauritius was occupied by the Dutch, ;later by the French and then finally British before the island got its independence. During the different reigns, slaves were brought from different places, namely Africa and India. Hence, today the island is home to different cultures from all over the world among some are Indian, French, African and British. From all these cultures, a new and different language was born known as the Mauritian Creole which is having bit of French, English and Hindi or Bhojpuri. Mauritius can be described as a melting cultural pot. This island is home to people of different religion and ethnicities. From temples, chapels, mosques and pagoda, the country has it all. Chinese New year is a national holiday on the island and is pompously celebrated along with dragon dance, fire crackers and Chinese special cakes. Majority of the people are multilingual with a French based Creole as their mother tongue. Most people are fluent in both French and English. People from different backgrounds usually greet each other by a peck on each cheek

    The island is home to various beaches including the Trou aux Biches beach, Flic en Flac beach, Mont choisy, pereybere, Blue bay. It doesn’t matter which one you choose to visit as they are equally beautiful with clear blue waters and white sandy beaches. A nice evening on the beach watching the sunset is something everyone needs atleast once in his lifetime!

    Born out of volcanic eruptions, Mauritius consist of various mountain ranges and hills. If you are an adventurer or mountain hiker, you are going to love this aspect of the island. There are many mountains where you can go for a hike and enjoy the beautiful breathtaking view! Some common places for hiking are Le Morne, Le Pouce, Pieter Both. These mountains are different from each other in the shapes and heights and offer different views in different directions of the island.

    Mauritius can now be found on the list of Unesco World Heriitage with two sites namely Le Morne Brabant and Appravasi Ghat
    Situated in the South of the island, Le Morne Brabant was a shelter to the maroon slaves brought to the island by the British, French and Dutch. Running away from the harsh treatment of their masters, this beautiful peak used to offer them refuge. The mountain has been added to the UNESCO World Heritage site as a tribute to the freedom of the slaves. It also offers great hiking experience with an exhilarating view from top.

    Chamarel is a small village in Mauritius and a major tourist attraction. You can observe array of colors such as red, green, yellow, indigo and violet. While many believe that its due to the presence of metal oxides, some believe its due t lava cooling at different speed after a volcanic eruption. You can buy a unique souvenir having these different colored earths enclosed in a test-tube.

Mauritian cuisine is very diverse with the mixed influence from French, Indian, African and Asian cuisines coming together to form the unique and delicious Mauritian Cuisine. Street foods are something not to be missed while in Mauritius, the famous ‘Dhall Puri’- made up of split yellow peas and served along with some traditional curries f the island.  You should also try Vindaye and Kalia along with the yet famous and unique dish “7cari” which is usually served at hindu weddings and can also be found at some restaurants across the island.

    Golf has become one of the top sports of Mauritius and attracts many visitors. Mauritius was the third country where golf was played after United Kingdom and India. The Mauritius Gymkhana Golf club is the fourth oldest golf course in the world and was opened by the Royal Navy Members in 1902
