An uncontrolled mind can be compared to a five year old kid who wants to run amok through the toys alley of a store, only able to stand still for a while before getting the urge to run again. If you allow your mind to continuously run around without interjecting, it only continues with full force until you discover your mind has slowly transformed into a prison.
However, no matter how hard it may seems, you can still free your mind. Human beings are very adapting in nature. We can pick up on new habits throughout our lives. To obtain a peaceful mind, we need to uninstall the present operating system of the mind which is “chaos” so that we can return to the original nature of the mind which is harmony and balance.
“Peace doesn’t mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble or hardwork. Peace means to be in the midst of all those things and still be clam in your heart.”-Unknown
Yes, I agree it sounds difficult, but no worry, below are some efficient techniques to help calm your mind.
Focus on the positive aspects
For years, we have all allowed negative thinking to prevail and control our mind and as a result, the physical world is merely a product of our thoughts. Remember that energy flows where attention goes. Focus all your attention on the positive aspects of your environment and yourself. Focus on what makes you happy, what you are thankful for. Be grateful for all the wonderful things in your life. You can hence retrain your mind to think more positively and as a result you will start to feel more peaceful since you won’t be emphasising on the negativity around you but instead concentrate on the positivity.
Talk to yourself.
Pause and pay attention to your brain at this very moment- what are the thoughts you are observing? Most probably, you will notice that the majority of your thoughts are from what you lived today, what made you angry, degrading thoughts you had about yourself... Despite of so much negativity around you, you can maintain a positive and relaxed mindset by talking to yourself. Words carry a lot of meaning and power, use them to your advantage. Whenever you feel stressed, just close your eyes and say words like Calm, peaceful, Light, Breeze, Beach, Sun, Relaxing. You can add other words too to the list. Try it out once right now, and feel the difference. Repeat this step throughout the day whenever you feel stressed, heavy or anxious.
Meditate
Meditation stops the bombarding flow of thoughts in your mind and shifts your mind to a space where stillness takes charge. Meditation brings awareness to the body and makes it easier for you to control your mind and cope with daily challenges. It is simple, just sit down quietly and focus on nothing but your breath for at least ten minutes a day on a daily basis. After a few days of practice, you will notice the goodness it brings you and you will want more of it. Meditation will prove you that attaining a peaceful mind is not at all impossible.
Live in the present
Forget about the works of tomorrow or the uncertainty of your future. Constantly worrying causes discomfort to the body and may lead to anxiety, depression, stress and many other problems. Allow yourself to flow from one moment to the next just as a child; you will know what true peace feels like. Train your mind to live in the present instead of living in the past or future.
Disconnect for a while
Take a vacation away from the daily stress of your life, you can opt far from the city and reconnect with mother-nature. Do not get do much attach to this material world, remember your roots. We emerge from a place of pure harmony and peace which the materialistic world cannot provide. Go for a trip to a hill station or trekking in the woods, smell the greenery, breath in some fresh air and enjoy the peace of mind!
