Rwanda breaks world record with 67.5% women in Parliament

Women now make up 67.5% of the parliament in Rwanda

Rwanda just broke its own world record of 64% to become 67.5% of women present in the parliament. The country has for over a decade been topping the global list of countries with the most female political parliamentarians. This  is mainly due to the country’s constitution stipulating that at least 30% of deputies in the Lower House of the Parliament must be women. Out of 80 seat, women will now occupy 54 seats of the Parliament

The RPF(Rwandan Patriotic Front) lead coalition won 40 seats and 24 of those who are top of the party’s list candidates are women. The Social Democratic Party (PSD) and the Liberal Party (PL), which won five and four seats respectively, will each send two female MPs to the house. Other female MPs will come from PS-Imberakuri, which won two seats in the house with its leader Christine Mukabunane being on the top of the party's list, and youth representatives where one out of the two seats reserved for the youth will be occupied by a lady, Clarisse Imaniriho.

Given that 64 per cent of parliamentarians in the outgoing Chamber of Deputies were women, the increased number of women parliamentarians in the house has been appreciated by many.
