5 Things to learn from Malala Yousafzai!

Malala Yousafzai is an activist, champion of human rights, Nobel prize winner and girl’s education advocate.  Her words and actions offer inspiration and hope to people all over the world.

She was shot by a Taliban gunman in 2012, while travelling home from school.  She was only fifteen and had already been advocating for girls rights to education in her country Pakistan for several years.  One year after the incident, Malala gave an inspiring speech at the United Nations which made her win the position of one of the most inspiring, influential and important young people today!

Today, four years after her speech, Malala transformed her personal passion into an international movement to make the world a better place for women and girls at large.

At the young age of 21, Malala Yousafzai, is a role model to many and here are some of the invaluable lessons we can all learn from her.

1. Be humble

“I tell my story not because it is unique but because it is not. It is the story of many young girls”

Malala is the youngest person to receive a noble prize. Despite all her awards, fame and achievements, she always acts and speaks with humility, grace and kindness.  This act is not specific to her contribution to gender equality but is instead a quality that all of us should build and possess.

2. Be Brave

“There is a moment where you have to choose whether to be silent or to stand up.”

Malala has shown immense courage continuing to fight for what was right facing adversity that many of us could barely imagine. She stood up many times against fear, violence and threats. We can all be inspired by her courage and choose to be more bold and not to give in to our small fears, but instead stand strong and face it all as she did!

3. Voice out!

“We realize the importance of our voices only when we are silenced!”

Very often we tend to take the freedom to raise our voices in safety for granted. Malala reminds us of the many voices silenced out of fear and weakness. So, ladies speak up and voice out! Let us  use our voices so that those who have been silenced can be heard.

4. Be knowledgeable

“None of the nine biggest countries in Africa, Latin America and developing Asia have increased their education budgets. Several are even making drastic cuts putting more girls out of school.”

Malala has good knowledge of the cause she is fighting for, and this keeps on reminding her of the importance to bring a change. Being well informed about any topic you are into will make people listen to you more carefully and take you seriously. The lesson we learn here is that we should be well informed and constantly updating our knowledge irrespective of the field or cause.

5. Be determined!

“ I am just a committed and stubborn person who wants t see every child get quality education- who wants to see women having equal rights and who wants peace in every corner of the world.”

We tend to be impatient and frustrated on not seeing quick results, Malala teaches us the power of conviction, dedication and determination by never wavering off from her commitment to girls education no matter what she is going through!
